DRAMA AT ALBERT OJWANG FUNERAL TODAY

Tension, Tears, and Police Presence at Burial of Teacher and Blogger Albert Ojwang
By Muimi.
The burial of Albert Ojwang, a respected teacher and outspoken blogger who died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody, turned chaotic on Thursday as emotions flared and tensions escalated with the unexpected arrival of police officers at the funeral.
Ojwang, whose social media commentary often challenged local authorities and highlighted issues in the education sector, was arrested under unclear circumstances last week. He died while in custody, sparking outrage among family, friends, and human rights groups who suspect foul play.
The burial, held at his rural home in western Kenya, was meant to be a peaceful send-off. However, mourners were left stunned and angry when a contingent of uniformed police officers arrived mid-ceremony. According to witnesses, the officers claimed they were present to “monitor the situation” and “maintain order,” but their presence only inflamed the already tense atmosphere.
"We are grieving, and yet those suspected to be responsible for his death are showing up here like it’s a normal event. This is disrespect of the highest order," said a relative, who requested anonymity out of fear of reprisal.
Several mourners reportedly confronted the officers, demanding answers and accountability. Community leaders at the event condemned the intimidation, with some calling for an independent investigation into Ojwang's death.
“Albert was a voice for the voiceless. Silencing him in this way is not just a tragedy for his family, but a blow to freedom of expression and justice in this country,” said human rights activist Janet Nyaboke, who attended the burial.
Social media has since been flooded with messages of condolence, tributes to Ojwang’s work, and renewed calls for police reform. Hashtags such as #JusticeForOjwang and #EndPoliceBrutality have begun trending in Kenyan digital spaces.
The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has promised to investigate the circumstances of Ojwang’s death. However, many Kenyans remain skeptical, citing a history of slow or inconclusive probes into similar cases.
Albert Ojwang is survived by his wife and two young children. Mourners remembered him as a passionate educator, fearless blogger, and devoted father who believed in justice and transparency.
As the dust settles, one thing remains clear: his death—and the events surrounding it—have left a scar on the conscience of a nation still struggling to hold its institutions accountable.
