Police Officer Arrested After Shooting Unarmed Civilian in Nairobi CBD
Nairobi, June 17, 2025
The National Police Service (NPS) has confirmed the arrest of a police officer involved in the shooting of an unarmed civilian during protests in the Nairobi Central Business District (CBD) on June 17, 2025. The officer allegedly discharged an anti-riot shotgun, striking the civilian in an incident that has sparked widespread concern and outrage.
According to a press statement issued by the Office of the Inspector General, the shooting took place amid demonstrations that turned chaotic within the city centre. The police watchdog body took swift action, with the Inspector-General ordering the immediate arrest and arraignment in court of the officer involved.
"The National Police Service has noted with great concern an incident involving the shooting of an unarmed civilian," the statement read. "The said police officer has since been arrested."
In addition to addressing the shooting, the NPS also raised alarm over the presence of groups armed with crude weapons participating in the protests. While reaffirming its commitment to public order and safety, the police service warned that it would not tolerate criminal behaviour disguised as protest action.
"The Service takes great exception and does not condone such unlawful groupings. Such individuals will be handled firmly, according to the law," the statement continued.
Investigations are ongoing to identify and apprehend individuals involved in violent activities during the protest. Meanwhile, the civilian who was shot was taken to the hospital and is currently receiving medical attention.
The incident has added fuel to the already tense situation in the CBD, with civil society groups and human rights organizations calling for accountability and a thorough investigation into the use of force by police.
The NPS has promised transparency in handling the matter and reiterated its responsibility to uphold the law while respecting the rights of all citizens.
