Peter Kagwanja: Jubilee is squarely in broad-based govt
President and Chief Executive of the Africa Policy Institute, Peter Kagwanja, who is also a political commentator, has in black and white told Kenyans that the Jubilee Party is in the broad-based government.
Through a short message on X on Friday, October 3, 2025, Kagwanja plainly stated that the former ruling party is not part of the opposition
Jubilee is squarely in the broad-based Government!” Kagwanja wrote on X while reposting an interview with a local TV station.
Kagwanja’s view on Jubilee Party
During an interview with a local TV station, Kagwanja explained that the reason Jubilee has not come out openly to align itself with President William Ruto’s government is because of political sentiments on the ground.
He said the party is already part of the ruling government and plays a role in shaping national affairs by virtue of its men serving in the government in various capacities.
“The reason why Jubilee cannot come out openly and align itself with the government is because of sentiments on the ground. Jubilee is part of the broad-based government. Sometimes the truth has been brought forward irrespective of how painful it is,” Kagwanja said.
His remarks have ignited fresh debate in the Mt Kenya region, where the Jubilee Party once enjoyed a dominant following.
Kagwanja noted that while Jubilee leaders may hesitate to declare their support in public, the reality is that the party is firmly inside government and works alongside the ruling United Democratic Alliance.
Fanya Mambo Kinuthia backs Kagwanja’s stand
While at it, Political analyst Fanya Mambo Kinuthia, who was also present during the interview, backed Kagwanja’s position.
He argued that the United Democratic Alliance, which propelled President Ruto to power, is facing difficulties in Mt Kenya just like Jubilee.
Kinuthia added that the Democracy for Citizens’ Party is gaining ground and can easily beat Jubilee or UDA in the upcoming byelections.
William Ruto is pretty sure that his UDA Party, just like Jubilee, is dead in the Mt Kenya region,” Kinuthia said.
He went on to emphasise that the political shift in the mountain is undeniable and that voters have already moved away from Jubilee and UDA.
“Today, if you go anywhere within Mt Kenya and place a red ticket for any position and a green ticket for the same positions, the winner will be your good guess as mine. The mountain moved long ago,” he remarked.
The statements by Kagwanja and Kinuthia highlight the deep uncertainty that still surrounds the political direction of Mt Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
