Police boss Kanja gives a 3-day ultimatum over Nandi pool table assault incident
Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja has issued a three-day ultimatum for investigations into an assault incident involving police officers at Nandi Hills Police Station, following the circulation of disturbing CCTV footage on social media.
In a statement released by the National Police Service (NPS) on Friday, January 16, 2026, the police boss said the Service is deeply concerned by the incident, which reportedly occurred on January 10, 2026, and involves serious misconduct by officers captured on camera assaulting a civilian near a pool table inside the station.
The National Police Service is appalled by what has been depicted and unequivocally condemns such barbaric behaviour, which has no place in a civilised society,” the statement read.
Kanja confirmed that he has personally reviewed the footage and has directed the Internal Affairs Unit (IAU) to conduct a comprehensive and swift investigation, ordering the unit to conclude its probe within three days.
“The actions portrayed constitute a clear violation of the National Police Service Act, the Code of Conduct for Police Officers, and fundamental principles of human rights and dignity,” the NPS stated.
Professional probe
The police boss emphasised that the investigation will be carried out professionally and transparently, in collaboration with other independent oversight institutions, to establish the full facts and circumstances surrounding the incident. He warned that any officer found culpable will face firm disciplinary and legal action.
“The Internal Affairs Unit have three days to finalise their work. This will be conducted with the utmost professionalism to establish the full facts and circumstances, and the Service will work closely withother independent institutions to ensure transparency and accountability,” he added.
The NPS reassured the public of its commitment to accountability, professionalism, and lawful policing, stressing that misconduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Members of the public with information that could aid the investigation have been urged to report to the nearest police station or use toll-free numbers 999, 911, or 112. They may also submit information anonymously through FichuaKwaDCI via 0800 722 203 or WhatsApp 0709 570 000.
“The National Police Service remains resolute in conducting an impartial, thorough, and expedient investigation and reiterates its commitment to serving and protecting all Kenyans in a fair, lawful, and professional manner,” the statement concluded.
So far, the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has deployed a team to Nandi to help probe the incident, which has triggered public outrage and renewed scrutiny of police conduct.
