🕊️ "A Champion Forever" — The Heartbreaking Farewell to Diogo Jota

Gondomar, Portugal — July 5, 2025

On a sorrowful Saturday morning in Gondomar, Portugal, hundreds of mourners gathered at Igreja Matriz de Gondomar to pay tribute to Liverpool forward Diogo Jota, 28, and his younger brother André Silva, 25 — both victims of a tragic car accident in Zamora, Spain, on July 3 . The ceremony, led by the Bishop of Porto Manuel Linda, drew family, teammates, club officials, and thousands of local fans.

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk led the procession carrying a floral tribute in the shape of Jota's jersey number, “20” . His moving words, earlier shared via Instagram, captured the grief of a football family:

> “Man, I can’t believe it… Absolutely devastated and in total disbelief. What a human being, what a player, but most importantly what an unbelievable family man… A champion forever, number 20 forever. It’s been a privilege… We will miss you beyond words and never forget you.”  

At Jota’s side stood teammate Andy Robertson, carrying a tribute for André. In heartfelt reflection, he posted:

> “For me, I want to talk about my mate. My buddy… I could talk about him as a player for hours, but none of that feels like it matters right now. It’s the man… So genuine. Just normal and real… I want to remember his never‑ceasing smile from that magical day [his wedding]. I can’t believe we’re saying goodbye. It’s too soon, and it hurts so much.”  

Meanwhile, Mohamed Salah, Ibrahima Konaté, Curtis Jones, James Milner, and Trent Alexander‑Arnold each paid tribute across social media — expressing horror, sorrow, and pledges to support Jota’s wife Rute and their three young children .

Liverpool managing director Arne Slot added:

> “For us as a club, the sense of shock is absolute. Diogo was not just our player. He was a loved one… very special.”

Liverpool FC promptly paused all football activities and chartered flights to allow staff to attend the funeral. The club also announced its intention to pay out the remainder of Jota’s contract to his family .
