Five people killed in road accident in Njoro, Nakuru county

Five people were killed in an accident along Njoro-Nakuru Road, Nakuru county.

Police said the accident happened on Sunday night in the Kenyatta area along Njoro-Nakuru Road and involved a trailer and a salon car.

The lorry was heading for Njoro while the salon car was moving in the opposite direction. They collided head-on, leaving all five people on board dead.

Police said four people died on the spot, while the fifth one succumbed to the injuries in the hospital.

The bodies were moved to the mortuary pending an autopsy, police said.

Police said the driver of the lorry escaped the scene, and efforts to trace him were ongoing.

This increased to at least 13 people who were killed in two separate accidents that were reported in Makueni and Njoro areas.

The accidents happened Sunday night and left at least 30 people with serious injuries.

The other accident happened along the Mombasa Highway in Salama area, where a minibus collided head-on with a trailer at about 10 pm, leaving eight people dead.

The victims included the driver of the minibus and his seven passengers.

The bus was travelling from Mombasa to Nairobi when it collided with a trailer that was moving on the opposite direction, police said.

Police said about 28 other passengers on board were injured and rushed to hospitals in the area. They had serious injuries.

The accident caused a huge traffic jam in the stretch as police made efforts to clear the scene.

Survivors said the trailer was moving in the middle of the highway when it collided with the matatu. The driver of the trailer sustained multiple injuries in the accident.

The accidents increased to more than 20, the number of those killed in separate incidents in the country on Sunday night alone, police said.

They included 12 passengers, a driver, two pedestrians, three pillion passengers and six riders.

Police said more than 30 people were injured in the accidents and are nursing wounds in various hospitals. Fatal accidents have been on the rise amid efforts to address the menace.

The accidents leave many families in debt as they keep taking care of the bills of the injured ones.

Close to 5,000 people were killed in separate accidents in 2025.

Officials say reckless overtaking, speeding, and drunk driving remain among the leading causes of road accidents across the country, continuing to claim lives despite sustained public safety campaigns by the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA).

Mechanical failures from poorly maintained vehicles, including worn tyres and faulty brakes, have also been identified as significant contributors to the growing number of crashes.

In addition to driver negligence, poor road conditions such as potholes, confusing signage, and inadequate lighting make travel increasingly dangerous.
