Gachagua campaigns for Panyako via phone call to Malava residents

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown his weight behind Democratic Action Party-Kenya (DAP-K) candidate Seth Panyako in the upcoming Malava by-election, delivering his endorsement through a lively phone call that electrified a political rally in the constituency.

Gachagua, now a key figure in the emerging united opposition coalition, urged residents to vote overwhelmingly for Panyako, describing him as the strongest and most suitable candidate to represent the constituency.

In his phone address to the crowd on Friday, Gachagua began by greeting the hundreds of residents who had gathered, acknowledging the excitement and energy on the ground.

He apologised for his absence, explaining that engagements in Mbeere had made it difficult to attend in person.

“Sorry, I wanted to come but I was held up in Mbeere, but I am informed that all the leaders are there,” he said, prompting chants and cheers from the crowd.

Gachagua then issued a direct appeal to Malava voters, urging them to unite behind Panyako in what he described as an important moment for the Opposition’s agenda.

His remarks were punctuated by his signature phrase, “Hi cousins,” a light-hearted greeting that has become synonymous with his political persona and instantly energised the audience.

He used the moment to reiterate his broader political ambition to challenge and unseat President William Ruto in the 2027 general elections.

The rally also featured Jubilee Party deputy leader Fred Matiang’i, who threw his full support behind Panyako

Matiang’i told residents that he had commissioned a team of specialists to assess the political mood in Malava.

“Before I came here, I sent some experts to come and investigate here in Malava and asked them to tell me who will win votes in Malava, and they told me it would be Seth Panyako,” he said, drawing loud applause.

Their joint appearance—even with Gachagua joining virtually—was viewed as a powerful demonstration of solidarity among Opposition leaders, who have recently intensified efforts to consolidate support in the Western Kenya voting bloc.

The united opposition camp, bringing together figures from DAP-K, and Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP), has framed the Malava race as a test of its growing influence.

The endorsement follows DCP’s earlier decision to withdraw its own candidate, Edgar Busiega, from the by-election in favour of Panyako.

The move was framed as a gesture of unity and an illustration of the Opposition’s commitment to rallying behind a single strong candidate to maximise their chances of victory.

Panyako is expected to face stiff competition from other aspirants, including United Democratic Alliance (UDA) candidate David Ndakwa, who is banking on the ruling party’s organisational machinery and the support of Kenya Kwanza leaders.

With the by-election slated for November 27, 2025, political activity in Malava has intensified, with both camps holding frequent rallies and door-to-door campaigns.
