Kaguchia's lawyers allege they have been barred from seeing him

Lawyers representing Mukurwe-ini MP John Kaguchia on Monday claimed they had been denied access to their client after he was arrested and taken to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) headquarters along Kiambu Road.

High Court Advocate Ndegwa Njiru claimed he and fellow lawyer Muriu had been blocked from seeing the legislator despite presenting themselves at the reception.

"We are at the DCI reception with Muriu, and the DCI has issued instructions that we should not be allowed to access our client, Kaguchia," Njiru claimed.

The lawyers did not indicate the reasons given for the denial of access.

Kaguchia was arrested earlier on Monday outside the Royal Media Services studios after appearing on Inooro TV's Kiririmbi programme.

He had spent the night at the media house before his arrest.

His detention drew opposition leaders to the DCI headquarters, where they demanded that investigators follow due process and allow the MP access to legal representation.

By Monday afternoon, the DCI had not publicly announced the specific offences under investigation or responded to claims by Kaguchia's lawyers that they had been denied access to their client.
