Police warn motorists as schools close for holidays

The National Police Service (NPS) has warned motorists and other road users to observe traffic rules as schools close for the end-of-year holidays, with increased travel expected across the country.

NPS spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga said the anticipated movement of learners reuniting with their families would increase traffic volumes and raise the risk of road accidents.

He said police, working with the National Transport and Safety Authority (NTSA), would intensify traffic enforcement and public sensitisation campaigns to protect travellers, particularly children.

“The safety of all road users, especially our children, remains a top priority for the National Police Service,” Nyaga said in a statement.

He said the operation would target speeding, unroadworthy vehicles, overloading and failure to use safety belts.

Nyaga urged motorists to exercise caution, adhere to designated speed limits and avoid driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

He also warned against distractions, including the use of mobile phones while driving, and called on pedestrians and motorcyclists to remain vigilant and comply with traffic regulations.

“Additionally, we call upon all motorists to exercise the utmost caution and responsibility by adhering to designated speed limits, refraining from driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, and avoiding distractions such as mobile phone use while driving,” he said.

The police spokesperson urged parents and guardians to ensure their children travel in reputable public service vehicles that are roadworthy and comply with safety requirements.

He also appealed to members of the public to report reckless driving and vehicles that pose a danger to passengers and other road users.

Reports can be made at the nearest police station or through emergency numbers 999 and 911.

The public can also contact the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or send information via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000.

Nyaga said more police officers would be deployed on the roads to ensure strict enforcement of traffic laws during the holiday period.

“The National Police Service remains committed to maintaining law and order on our roads to ensure they remain safe for all during this period and beyond,” he said.
