Ruto to KDF: Prepare for wars beyond the battlefield, uphold the Constitution

President William Ruto has challenged the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF) to prepare for emerging security threats by becoming more technologically literate, intellectually curious, and firmly grounded in the Constitution.

Ruto said the modern soldier must go beyond traditional military skills and be prepared to operate in an increasingly complex security environment shaped by technology, cyber threats and changing forms of warfare.

Speaking during the KDF pass-out parade at the Recruit Training School (RTS) in Eldoret, Ruto challenged the graduating recruits to uphold discipline and exercise sound judgment in the discharge of their duties.

“KDF must not simply defend the country Kenya is today. It must secure the country Kenya intends to become,” Ruto said.

He said the military's role extended beyond defending Kenya's territorial integrity to protecting constitutional order, national unity and the country's future.

Ruto urged the recruits to understand the limits of authority and ensure their actions remained within the law.

“Your service must now teach you to exercise judgment under pressure, to lead human beings and to know the difference between lawful authority and abuse,” he said.

The President said the recruits were joining an institution whose foundations had been laid by servicemen and veterans whose courage and sacrifice had shaped the KDF.

He challenged them to honour the legacy by preparing for threats that previous generations could not have anticipated.

“Honour them not only by preserving what they built, but also by preparing for a world they could not have imagined,” he said.

Ruto assured the military that the Government would continue investing in the welfare, training and operational readiness of the KDF.

He said the government would particularly strengthen capabilities in emerging areas including cybersecurity, intelligence, maritime security and military medicine.

“The Government will keep investing in the welfare, the training, and the readiness of KDF,” Ruto said.

The President also assured military personnel and their families that the government would continue recognising their contribution to national security.

He said those serving in the forces deserved dignity and recognition for their sacrifices.

The newly graduated recruits will be deployed to different areas of military service, including guarding Kenya's borders, airspace and territorial waters.

Others will serve in specialised areas such as engineering, medicine and technical operations.

Ruto reminded the recruits that national defence was not simply about preventing war, but creating conditions in which Kenyans could enjoy peace, freedom and stability.

“The purpose of national defence is not merely the absence of war. It is the presence of peace, the presence of freedom, and the presence of stability,” he said.

He urged the recruits to carry out their duties with courage and discipline while remaining committed to the Constitution.

“Let the Constitution be your compass. Defend our sovereignty. Protect our people. Secure Kenya's future,” Ruto said.
