Wamalwa: We don’t know who Kenya’s next president will be, but it won’t be Ruto

Democratic Action Party of Kenya (DAP–K) leader Eugene Wamalwa has declared that while the opposition may not yet know who among them will become Kenya’s next president, one thing is certain: it will not be William Ruto.
Speaking during an interview on Monday, October 13, 2025, Wamalwa said the opposition alliance is united by a shared resolve to prevent President Ruto from securing a second term, accusing his administration of mismanaging the country through corruption, overtaxation, and poor governance.
We do not know who amongst us is going to be the sixth president because one of us will be,” Wamalwa said. “But we do know who must never be president again, and that man comes from Sugoi.”
DAP–K party chief said the opposition agrees that Kenya cannot withstand another five years under Ruto’s leadership.
“We are saying one term because there’ll be no country left if we were to go at this rate,” he said. “Look at the levels of corruption, the overtaxation, everything that’s going on in the country, it’s unacceptable.”
Wamalwa went on to emphasise that the opposition is rich with experienced and capable leaders who are ready to take charge.
“When you look at the lineup in the opposition, each one of us is qualified to be president,” he said. “We have two former number twos, Kalonzo Musyoka, the Wiper Patriotic Front leader, and Rigathi Gachagua, the former Deputy President before his impeachment.”
He also mentioned other key figures who could vie for the presidency in 2027, including People’s Liberation Party (PLP) leader Martha Karua and former Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i, noting that most opposition leaders have already been endorsed by their respective parties.
“Martha Karua has been cleared by PLP, Kalonzo by Wiper, and I was the first to be cleared by DAP–Kenya,” Wamalwa said. “We expect Rigathi will soon be cleared, and Matiang’i will also decide whether he’s running under Jubilee or UPA.”
