We have increased security ahead CHAN tournament - Murkomen

Interior and National Administration Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has assured the country and international community that Kenya is fully prepared, security-wise, to host the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in August.

Speaking after inspecting Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums on Monday, Murkomen said the government has put in place comprehensive security protocols to ensure the success of the continental football tournament.

“We want to assure the country that we have put in place elaborate measures to ensure visitors are received well at the airport. They are going to be facilitated at the airport. We have also put security at the airport to ensure visitors are screened,” said the CS.

He further revealed that security arrangements have been extended beyond the stadiums to include hotels, major roads, and key tourist destinations to ensure the safety of both players and fans.

“Visitors will be secured not just in the stadiums, but also in their accommodation facilities and as they tour different parts of the country,” he added.

Murkomen pointed out that both Nyayo and Kasarani stadiums have been upgraded with modern access gates that require digital entry cards, minimising the risk of overcrowding and potential stampedes.

“We do not expect any stampedes. The entry systems are modern and efficient. We are encouraging all fans to go through the proper channels and make sure they have tickets,” he emphasised.

The CS also noted that the stadiums are equipped with CCTV cameras, enabling real-time surveillance and enhanced crowd monitoring. “We will be seeing every detail around the stadiums. Our security systems are ready,” he said.

In a broader appeal to the public, Murkomen called on Kenyans to show hospitality and discipline as the country prepares to host teams and fans from across the continent.

“Even in any family, they say when visitors come, you must be at your best behaviour. Let us be courteous to our guests, help them where needed, and showcase the Kenyan warmth and friendliness,” he said.

The CHAN tournament is expected to draw thousands of visitors to Nairobi and other host cities.
