Amisi proposes Maraga-Sifuna 2027 ticket
Saboti MP Caleb Amisi has expressed support for former Chief Justice David Maraga's presidential ambitions, while suggesting Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna as a possible running mate if he does not vie for the presidency.
Speaking on Tuesday during the ‘State of the Nation’ address, Amisi called for an end to tribal-based political formations, arguing that Kenya needs a new generation of leaders capable of steering the country in a different direction.
"There is no going to special groupings. Don't tell us to come and join you. Let them come and join us, all these tribal groupings," Amisi said.
The legislator urged political leaders and Kenyans to rally behind candidates he believes can unite the country beyond ethnic interests, singling out Maraga as a suitable presidential contender.
Amisi said Kenya must break away from its traditional political culture if it hopes to achieve different outcomes.
"They should all come and support people like Maraga. If Sifuna is not going to be a presidential candidate, the only person I will allow Sifuna to deputise is Maraga. We can't keep on doing the same things the same way and expect different results," he said.
The MP also announced plans to launch a political outfit aimed at increasing youth participation in governance and elective politics.
"That is why I'm here. I will be launching the People's Movement to enable young people to go to Parliament," he said.
The former CJ has on several occasions pledged to restore systems he said have been weakened if elected president in 2027, including ensuring autonomy in sector management and improving service delivery.
“I am going to rescue this country from the destruction caused by the current administration. I will stop micromanaging and demand results from each sector,” he said.
He also pledged to uphold the rule of law and strictly adhere to the Constitution.
“Abiding by the Constitution will help seal corruption loopholes that cause Kenya to lose vast public funds,” he added.
Maraga is associated with the United Green Movement Party (UGM), whose vision is to build a united, peaceful and prosperous nation where citizens enjoy social, economic and democratic rights while living in dignity and harmony with the environment.
The party says its mission is to create a society in which all Kenyans can enjoy a better quality of life while promoting environmental sustainability.
UGM's core values include constitutionalism, the rule of law, protection of rights and freedoms, democratic governance, public participation and the empowerment of marginalised groups.
Among its key objectives are addressing social inequalities, promoting cooperation among like-minded political parties and establishing a transparent and accountable government.
The party is guided by principles such as grassroots democracy, social justice, equal opportunity, non-violence, respect for diversity, decentralisation, and sustainable economic development.
