G7 leaders back Ukraine, tighten pressure on Russia in France summit

Leaders of the Group of Seven (G7) nations have reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine and pledged to intensify pressure on Russia with a declaration addressing some of the world's most pressing geopolitical challenges.

In a joint statement, the leaders pledged to strengthen military, economic and humanitarian support for Ukraine as the war with Russia continues.

The declaration underscored the group's commitment to Ukraine's sovereignty and territorial integrity while promising additional measures to bolster the country's defence capabilities.

"We, the Leaders of the G7, stand united in our unwavering support for Ukraine in defending its freedom, sovereignty, and territorial integrity," the leaders said in the statement.

They also reaffirmed solidarity with Ukrainians affected by attacks on critical infrastructure and cultural heritage, praising the country's resilience and progress on the battlefield.

The leaders agreed to increase the delivery of air defence systems, interceptors and long-range military capabilities to Kyiv.

They further signalled their readiness to extend licences that would enable Ukraine to expand domestic military production, a move aimed at strengthening the country's long-term defence capacity.

In addition, the G7 pledged further support to help Ukraine maintain energy resilience ahead of winter, acknowledging the severe strain that repeated attacks have placed on the country's energy infrastructure.

The summit declaration also outlined plans to increase economic pressure on Russia through tougher sanctions. The leaders said they would strengthen restrictions targeting Russia's oil and gas sectors as part of efforts to weaken the country's war economy.

Beyond the conflict in Ukraine, the G7 leaders turned their attention to the Middle East, where they welcomed what they described as a breakthrough diplomatic opportunity.

The group endorsed a newly announced agreement between the United States and Iran aimed at preventing Tehran from acquiring nuclear weapons while addressing concerns over its regional and ballistic activities.

"We welcome the announcement of a deal between the United States and Iran," the statement said, describing it as "an historic opportunity" to address long-standing security concerns in the region. The leaders expressed their readiness to contribute to the implementation of the agreement.

The declaration also addressed ongoing conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza. The G7 called for an immediate and robust ceasefire in Lebanon and backed efforts by the country's leadership to secure a monopoly on arms and safeguard national sovereignty.

In Gaza, the leaders pledged to accelerate humanitarian and reconstruction efforts while calling for an end to violence in the West Bank

The summit brought together leaders from France, the United States, the United Kingdom, Germany, Italy, Canada and Japan, with French President Emmanuel Macron hosting the gathering.

Invited guests included President William Ruto and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
