Gachagua to Ruto: Restore dignity of the payslip, abolish housing levy

Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua has called on President William Ruto to abolish the contentious housing levy, terming it a burden on Kenyan workers’ payslips.

Speaking during a press conference on Tuesday, Gachagua said the levy has caused a burden on Kenyans who are struggling with the crippling economy.

“If you want to be calm, please abolish the housing levy and give dignity to the payslip,” he said.

Responding to President Ruto’s recent remarks on jobless youth, Gachagua urged the Head of State to focus on reviving the middle class, which he believes is key to job creation.

He said those affected by unemployment are the youths, who are already struggling with harsh economic conditions.

“Please restore the dignity of the payslip, restore the capacity of the middle class — the middle class will give jobs to these young people,” he stated.

The DCP leader warned that continued overtaxation is fueling public anger and disillusionment.

He challenged Ruto to be attentive to the voices of Kenyans, noting that the people are angrier due to the rising cost of living and punitive levies.

At the same time, Gachagua cautioned against suppressing demonstrators, saying they are simply calling for transparency, accountability, and good governance.

The remarks come amid recent nationwide protests, largely led by young Kenyans demanding an end to extrajudicial killings and enforced disappearances..

Some leaders have called for dialogue to address the underlying issues leading to youth unrest and protests.

On Monday, former Prime Minister Raila Odinga made a raft of proposals to the government to put an end to youth-led protests that have rocked the country and enhance service delivery in the country.

Raila proposed an inclusive Inter-Generational National Conclave to hear Kenyans across all divide and come up with reforms and changes necessary to take the country forward.
