Governor Mutai stares at second impeachment as fresh motion tabled

Kericho Governor Erick Mutai is once again staring at the threat of impeachment, following the tabling of a fresh motion in the County Assembly seeking his removal from office.

Sigowet Ward MCA Kiprotich Rogony has submitted a proposed motion, accompanied by supporting documentation, to the office of the Clerk of the County Assembly.

The motion is backed by evidence and a signed list of Members of the County Assembly endorsing the move.

The clerk, upon receiving the documents, confirmed that the motion meets the requirements of Standing Order No. 70 and subsequently forwarded it to the Assembly Business Committee for scheduling.

The Speaker of the County Assembly has also affirmed that the motion was in order, stating:

"The proposed motion complies with our Standing Order No. 70 and will be scheduled accordingly."

The details of the allegations remain under wraps, but insiders suggest the move is tied to governance and accountability concerns.

This marks the second attempt to oust Mutai from office, after a previous impeachment motion in late 2024 was thwarted at the Senate stage, where it was dismissed on procedural grounds.

Should the Assembly approve the motion with the required threshold, the matter will again be forwarded to the Senate for determination.

As per legal provisions, the governor will be accorded an opportunity to defend himself before both the County Assembly and, if it escalates, the Senate.
