Govt to hold joint funeral service for Kisumu accident victims

Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o has announced that the county government, in collaboration with the national government, will hold a joint funeral service for the victims of the recent Kisumu Coptic roundabout accident.

Posting on his X account on Monday, August 11, 2025, Nyong’o stated that the send-off will take place this Saturday, August 16, at Nakki Primary School in Nyakach Sub-county.

“The county government is working with the national government to ensure a dignified send-off for the victims of the recent Coptic roundabout accident. A joint funeral service will take place this Saturday, August 16th, at Nakki Primary School in Nyakach Sub-county.”Nyong’o wrote

He added that he had received a briefing on preparations from the funeral organising committee, led by his deputy, Dr. Ochieng Owili, and Engineer Vincent Kodera.

“Our thoughts remain with the bereaved families, and we continue to wish a quick recovery to those still in the hospital,” Nyong’o wrote.

The accident occurred last week near the Coptic roundabout along the Kisumu–Kakamega road when a school bus belonging to AIC Naki High School lost control, veered into the opposite lane, and plunged into a ditch. The vehicle was ferrying mourners returning from a funeral in Nyahera.

26 passengers lost their lives on the spot, while 28 sustained serious injuries and were rushed to various hospitals in Kisumu County.

Government support for victims

Earlier, Medical Services Principal Secretary Dr. Ouma Oluga announced that the government would cater for all medical bills and burial expenses for the victims. He further revealed that pathologists from the Nyanza and Western regions had been mobilised to carry out postmortems once families grant consent.

Dr. Oluga emphasised that the state is working closely with county officials to ensure the victims are accorded a dignified send-off.

Preparations for the joint funeral are ongoing, with both levels of government assuring the affected families of full support during this difficult time.
