I’m just an ordinary person’ – Ruto on his rise to presidency

President William Ruto has reaffirmed his belief that his rise to the presidency was not a product of privilege or entitlement, but purely the grace of God.

Ruto reflected on his unlikely journey to the highest office in the land, admitting that even today, some still find it hard to believe he is the president.

“I am just an ordinary person. I got here by the grace of God. Some people still do not believe, up to now, that I am the president,” he said.

The Head of State made the remarks when he hosted Nairobi United Football Club players, the 2025 winners of the Mozzart Bet Cup, at State House.

Present was Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja among other leaders.

He added: “Lakini Mungu ni nani? Mimi ndiyo niko hapa kwa sasa, wajipange.”

(But who is God? I am the one in office now; they should prepare themselves.

Ruto's statement appeared to be directed at his critics, who he said are accusing him of lowering the dignity of the presidency by welcoming common citizens into the country’s most prestigious facility.

They are now telling me that I have lowered the standards of the State House by bringing in ‘ordinary’ people,” he said.

He reminded them he is not ashamed of his background, having grown up before starting off selling chicken.

“I am a chicken farmer, and it is a very good business. Iko na pesa, by the way; I can give you tips. I have recruited many of my friends,” said Ruto.

According to the Head of State, the youth are the country’s greatest resource.

He encouraged the young people not to despise small beginnings, saying they can also achieve what they have set as goals

He explained that his administration will continue to invest in projects that support the youth for them to grow the economy.

This is the reason we are intentionally putting more resources in the education and training of our youth to build and productively exploit their talents to drive our economic growth,” he stated.
