National schools shine with As, subcounty schools with C+
Ogamba said 1,932 (0.19 per cent) of the total 993,226 candidates who sat the exam obtained an overall mean grade A (plain), marking an improvement from the 1,693 (0.18 per cent) candidates who achieved a similar grade in 2024.
National schools produced the highest number of candidates with mean grade of A at 1,526, followed by Extra County schools with 197 and Private Schools with 185.
The CS said 270,715 (27.18 per cent) of the candidates obtained direct university entry qualification of mean grade C+ and above, compared to 246,391 (25.53 per cent) in 2024.
Subcounty schools produced more candidates in the category of C+ and above compared to County schools, accounting for 72,699 and 36,600, respectively.
Ogamba said the number of candidates with grade C- (minus) and above was 507,131 (50.92 per cent) compared to 476,889 (49.41 per cent) in 2024.
The number of candidates who scored pass grade D+ and above was 634,082 (63.67 per cent) compared to 605,774 (62.76 per cent in 2024.
The examination results were for the second year in a row graded using the reviewed grading system, in which the overall grade considers Mathematics, the best-performed language among English/Kiswahili/Kenyan Sign Language, and the best-performed five subjects.
Female candidates outshone their male counterparts in six subjects: English, Kiswahili, Kenyan Sign Language, Home Science, CRE and Art & Design.
Male candidates, on the other hand, outdid female candidates in 11 subjects: Mathematics Alternatives A and B, Biology and Biology for the Blind, Chemistry, General Science, History & Government, Geography, IRE, Building & Construction and Business Studies.
Ogamba said the performance of male candidates was comparable to their female counterparts in seven (7) subjects of Physics, Agriculture, Computer Studies, French, German, Arabic and Music.
He said the number of female candidates registered in Metalwork, Power Mechanics, Electricity, Drawing & Design and Aviation Technology was too small to allow for a meaningful comparison of performance with male candidates:
Overall, Ogamba said that the 2025 KCSE examination recorded a significant improvement in 17 subjects, similar to the number of subjects that recorded a significant improvement in 2024.
He said 11 subjects recorded a significant decline in performance in the 2025 exams compared to 10 in 2024.
