Police seize 5K litres of chang’aa in Dandora

Police in Nairobi have seized and destroyed more than 5,000 litres of illicit brew in a major crackdown on chang’aa dens in Dandora.
In a statement on Saturday, August 30, 2025, the National Police Service (NPS) revealed that the raid targeted a notorious chang’aa den in the area.
During the operation, police seized and destroyed more than 5,000 litres of kangara on site. Additionally, six copper manufacturing coils and three electric boilers were recovered and retained as evidence,” read the statement.
Furthermore, the NPS revealed that the owner of the den managed to escape during the operation and is currently on the run.
Nanyuki’s operation
This comes a few days after police officers in Nanyuki nabbed one person of interest and recovered 54 litres of illicit alcohol during an evening operation in Likii Estate, Laikipia East Sub-County.
According to the National Police Service (NPS), the intelligence-led operation was conducted on August 23, 2025, by officers from Nanyuki Police Station.
In a statement on Sunday, August 24, 2025, NPS revealed that the liquor, believed to be chang’aa, was seized and secured as evidence.
“During the operation, officers recovered 54 litres of illicit alcohol, suspected to be chang’aa. One person of interest was arrested and taken to the station for processing. The recovered exhibits have been secured as evidence, and operations against illicit and dangerous drugs are ongoing,” read the statement in part.
“The National Police Service appreciates the public’s support and encourages continued collaboration in the fight against drug and substance abuse.”
Similarly, police destroyed at least 15,000 litres of illegal alcohol in the Soweto area of Kayole in a sustained effort to combat the sale and distribution of the illicit alcohol in the country.
In a statement on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, NPS revealed that the destruction was following an intensified crackdown on alcohol on Tuesday, August 12, 2025.
“Police Intensify Crackdown on Illegal Alcohol in Soweto, Nairobi: On 12 August 2025, a multi-agency team in the Nairobi Region conducted a targeted operation against illicit alcohol in Soweto’s Duka Moja area, Kayole Sub-County,” NPS said.
