Police Service Warns Motorists of Heavy Traffic Along Nairobi-Mombasa Highway

The National Police Service (NPS) has warned Kenyans planning to use the Nairobi–Mombasa highway to be wary of massive traffic congestion along the ever-busy route.

NPS Spokesperson Muchiri Nyaga on Friday morning said the gridlock, which affected the highway between Emali and Masimba, was caused by an accident that took place at the Jet Inn area.

According to him, the fatal accident occurred after three trailers collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road, with vehicles unable to pass.

Reports indicate that the accident, which occurred on Friday morning, left one person dead and a driver nursing serious injuries. However, the emergency response team rushed the victim to hospital.

"The police service wishes to notify the public of a serious traffic gridlock between Emali and Masimba along the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway," said Nyaga.

"This disruption follows a fatal road traffic accident at Jet Inn area involving three trailers that collided on a railway bridge, completely blocking the road," he added.

The Police boss noted that several police officers had already been deployed at the scene and were working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow.

Motorists plying the route were urged to follow the traffic regulations, with Nyaga adding that they would take stern action against those found flouting traffic rules.

To further address the escalating congestion, motorists who plan to use the section of highway were told to seek alternative routes as the officers continue to ease traffic flow along the stretch.

In particular, the Police Spokesperson advised Mombasa-bound motorists to consider using the Machakos–Wote–Makindu route, while Nairobi-bound drivers were urged to use the Makindu–Wote–Machakos route.

"NPS is working with relevant agencies to restore normal traffic flow. We urge motorists to exercise patience and maintain lane discipline, consider alternative routes to ease congestion and enhance safety," the Police Spokesperson reiterated.

He added, "Police officers have been deployed to the area and will take stern action against anyone violating traffic rules. NPS reaffirms its steadfast commitment to maintaining law and order on our roads."
