President Ruto mourns Zambia’s Edgar Lungu, hails his service

President William Ruto has extended his condolences to the people of Zambia following the death of former President Edgar Lungu, who passed away on Thursday at the age of 68.

In his tribute, Ruto described Lungu as a dedicated and visionary leader who served Zambia with devotion.

“Our condolences to the family and the people of Zambia for the untimely death of Former President Edgar Lungu,” the President said.

“President Lungu was a progressive and outstanding leader who served the people of Zambia with zeal and commitment. May God grant the people of Zambia strength and comfort during this painful time. Rest In Peace.”

Lungu died on Thursday while undergoing medical care in South Africa.

His daughter, Tasila Lungu, who serves in Zambia’s National Assembly, confirmed the news in a video message.

While the exact cause of death has not been revealed, it is understood that Lungu had been receiving treatment in recent weeks.The late president held office from 2015 to 2021.

He first assumed leadership following the death of President Michael Sata and went on to win a full term in the 2016 general election.

After losing to President Hakainde Hichilema in 2021, Lungu stepped away from public life but returned to active politics in 2023, aligning with the opposition.

In late 2024, Zambia’s Constitutional Court ruled that he could not run for the presidency again, citing term limits set out in the national constitution

Though his time in office was met with both praise and criticism—including concerns over governance and corruption—Lungu remained an influential figure until his death.

Messages of sympathy have poured in from leaders across Africa, with many acknowledging his role in shaping Zambia’s political journey.
