Ruku condemns Kahiga over remarks on Raila Odinga’s passing

Public Service and Human Capital Development Cabinet Secretary Geoffrey Ruku has strongly condemned Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga over his recent remarks about the late former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, terming them “un-African and deeply disrespectful.”
Speaking during an inspection of the Kamutu and Kianamuri Electrification Projects in Evurore, Mbeere North Subcounty, Embu County, Ruku said Kahiga’s comments were an affront to African traditions that value respect for the dead and urged him to do the honourable thing and resig
n.The governor’s utterances do not reflect the values and aspirations of African culture. You cannot speak ill of a person who has died. It is against our moral and cultural principles. He should resign,” Ruku said.
The CS further called upon the people of Nyeri to distance themselves from their governor’s remarks and demand accountability from their leaders.
He said leaders should be role models and promote unity, especially during a time when the country is mourning a prominent figure who dedicated his life to democracy and justice.
Ruku added that the country needs to move forward in unity and respect, noting that Kenya’s strength lies in upholding shared values, not in spreading hate or division.
His sentiments were echoed by former Mbeere North MP and current Senior Advisor to the President, Muriuki Njagagua, who also criticised Kahiga’s remarks.
Njagagua said it was unfortunate for a sitting governor to mock or demean a national figure who had contributed immensely to the country’s political evolution.
“The President recognised the late Prime Minister because of his achievements and sacrifices in the struggle for democracy. Disrespecting him even in death is not only uncouth but shameful,” Njagagua said.
The former MP emphasised that Kenyans should emulate leaders who promote peace and national cohesion rather than those who thrive on divisive rhetoric.
He further stated that President William Ruto’s gesture to honour the late Raila Odinga was a symbol of reconciliation and maturity in leadership something that should be celebrated, not mocked.
Njagagua and Ruku jointly appealed to the people of Mbeere North and across the nation to rally behind the government, noting that unity and development go hand in hand.
“The government is focused on delivering development and empowering citizens. Standing by it means supporting progress, peace, and prosperity for all,” they said.
