United Opposition Tells Nyeri McAs to Impeach Governor Kahiga if He Refuses to Resign

The sentiments were extremely irresponsible for national interests for a person holding high office to say such reckless utterances. We have to express our outrage; that’s why we find it necessary to dissociate ourselves,” Kituyi said.
He further argued that Nyeri, being a region with significant historical and political influence, should not be represented by leaders who make inflammatory statements while calling for Kahiga's impeachment.
“Nyeri is an important part of the country and holds a very important place in the nation's history. He should step down, and if that is not the case, then Nyeri has enough MCAs to start his impeachment. This is one of the best reasons why somebody should be impeached,” he added.
He added that the alliance had no association with Governor Kahiga, clarifying that he has never attended any United Opposition meetings nor been assigned any role within the coalition.
Kituyi called on the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), Kahiga’s political party, to take disciplinary action against him.
“Let the party take action, and I think that a person who takes such an action should be dewhipped. There should be enough reason for him to step down,” Kituyi stated, adding that Kahiga’s continued stay in office undermines public confidence in leadership.
At the time, Thirdway Alliance leader Ekuru Aukot also joined in the criticism, describing Kahiga’s remarks as “primitive and backward”. Aukot argued that the governor’s words had the potential to fuel ethnic tension and undermine peace.
“It is both primitive and backward for Governor Kahiga to make such remarks in 2025. It has brought a lot of ethnic tensions and hatred. If you saw the kind of reaction from the ODM side and also many Kenyans, people have called him names,” Aukot said.
He urged Nyeri Members of County Assembly (MCAs) to invoke Chapter Six of the Constitution on leadership and integrity, maintaining that Kahiga’s conduct demeaned the dignity of his office.
“I am hoping that Nyeri MCAs will start an impeachment process,” Aukot added as calls continue to mount for both political accountability and disciplinary action on the governor.
