Ruto announces Sh80m fund for Nairobi Artisans

President William Ruto has announced a Sh80 million fund to support artisans and mechanics in Nairobi county, saying the government is committed to improving the livelihoods of workers in the informal sector.

Speaking at State House on Thursday while hosting more than 5,000 artisans from Nairobi County, Ruto said the funding will enable small-scale traders and mechanics to acquire modern tools and equipment, helping them increase productivity and expand their businesses.

“To further strengthen the informal sector, we will provide Sh80 million to support artisans and mechanics in Nairobi County to acquire modern equipment and tools, enabling them to improve productivity and expand their enterprises,” the President said.

Ruto also assured informal sector workers that they would not be excluded from government efforts aimed at improving incomes, despite not receiving monthly payslips like civil servants.

“I understand that you do not have payslips, but you are business owners, you are artisans, you are Kenyans,” he said.

The President said government employees will start receiving enhanced salaries from August 1 following the recently gazetted pay increase. He added that similar measures are being developed to support Kenyans earning a living through small businesses and other informal activities.

“I have already directed that government workers who receive payslips get a pay increase from August 1. Just as we are taking care of other workers, I must also make arrangements for you because Kenya is not only for those who receive payslips; it is for everyone,” Ruto said.

The announcement comes as the government seeks to strengthen the informal sector, which employs millions of Kenyans and plays a significant role in the country's economy.

By improving access to modern equipment and expanding financial support, the administration hopes to boost productivity, create more jobs and increase incomes for small business owners across the country.
