Ruto commissions Ngong Road flyover in bid to ease Nairobi congestion

President William Ruto on Monday commissioned the Sh3.8 billion Ngong Road–Naivasha Road flyover, saying the project will ease congestion, improve mobility and boost economic productivity in Nairobi.

Speaking during the commissioning ceremony, Ruto said traffic congestion has for years imposed significant economic and social costs on the city by delaying workers, increasing the cost of doing business and reducing productivity.

“For too long, congestion has imposed a heavy cost on our economy and on the daily lives of our people. It has delayed workers on their way to earning a living, increased the cost of doing business, kept traders away from customers and taken precious time away from families,” Ruto said.

He described congestion as not merely a transport challenge but an economic one, noting that every hour spent in traffic translates into lost productivity, delayed income and missed opportunities.

The President said the flyover is a strategic investment aimed at improving the efficiency, productivity and competitiveness of the capital city.

According to Ruto, the project removes one of Nairobi’s long-standing traffic bottlenecks by separating traffic flows and enhancing safety for motorists, pedestrians and public transport users.

“This is what modern infrastructure should do: reduce travel time, lower the cost of transport, improve road safety and make cities work better for everyone,” he said.

Ruto thanked the Government and people of Spain for supporting the project, describing the partnership as one founded on mutual respect and a shared commitment to Kenya’s development.

The President said the commissioning forms part of a wider transformation of Nairobi’s transport infrastructure, with several major projects currently underway across the city.

He said construction of the Upper Hill–Kenyatta Avenue flyover, a Sh3 billion investment, is currently 60 per cent complete and is expected to improve access to the central business district while easing congestion around one of Nairobi’s busiest commercial zones.

Ruto also announced the upgrading of State House Road through a Sh1.6 billion project aimed at modernising another key transport corridor within the city.

In addition, he said the government is constructing access roads to Talanta Sports City through a Sh3.9 billion investment as part of preparations for the Africa Cup of Nations tournament scheduled for next year.

The President further revealed plans to dual the 23.5-kilometre Kiambu Road corridor from Muthaiga to Kiambu and its bypasses through a project valued at 221 million US dollars, approximately Sh30 billion.

He also disclosed that a modern traffic management centre valued at 60 million US dollars, about Sh7.9 billion, is already under construction and will support efforts to improve traffic flow and mobility within the city.

Ruto said the ongoing investments are intended to create a transport network capable of supporting Nairobi’s growing population, expanding economy and increasing demand for efficient urban mobility.
