Ruto: I will be faithful to what you and me agreed on

President William Ruto has penned a deeply personal and emotional tribute to the late Raila Amolo Odinga, Kenya’s former Prime Minister and opposition leader, affirming that he will be faithful to what they agreed on on the future of Kenya.

He mourned Raila’s passing with heartfelt words that acknowledged their complex political journey, moments of unity, and shared vision for Kenya’s future.

In his message written in the condolence book while in Parliament, he described him as “the spirit of our democracy” and a patriot whose sacrifices will forever shape the nation’s destiny.

“Baba Agwambo, you became the spirit of our democracy through prison storms and betrayals, but you were faithful to the highest calling of being a Kenyan patriot,” Ruto wrote.

Raila Odinga died on October 15, 2025, at the age of 80 while undergoing treatment at an Ayurvedic hospital in Kerala, India. His death has prompted a seven-day national mourning period, with flags flying at half-mast and a state funeral being organized.

President Ruto declared Friday, October 17, a public holiday to honor Raila’s legacy.

In his tribute, Ruto reflected on Raila’s decades-long struggle for democratic reform, recalling the opposition leader’s detentions, political betrayals, and unwavering commitment to national unity.

“Your sacrifice and contribution to our nation’s unity and prosperity will live in our hearts and inspire our actions,” he stated.

The message also revealed a personal bond between the two leaders, despite their political rivalry.

“My elder brother, fare thee well. I will be faithful to what you and I agreed on the future of Kenya,” Ruto added, hinting at a shared understanding or pact that transcended partisan politics.

Ruto’s tribute comes amid a wave of condolences from global leaders, civil society, and ordinary Kenyans.

Raila’s body was received at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport with full military honors and now lies at Lee Funeral Home in Nairobi.

Memorial services are planned in Nairobi, Kisumu, and Bondo, where Raila will be laid to rest beside his father, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.

“I will be faithful to what you and me agreed on the future of Kenya," Ruto concluded.

“His story will live in our hearts and inspire our actions.”
