Wiper delegates arrive in Nairobi for much-anticipated NDC

Excitement and anticipation filled the air early Friday morning as delegates of the Wiper Democratic Movement converged at Uhuru Park in Nairobi for the much-anticipated Wiper National Delegates Congress (NDC).

The meeting has been described by many as key for the party and a broader effort to unite the opposition ahead of the 2027 General Election.

By 7 a.m., the park had transformed into a sea of blue as thousands of delegates, draped in the party’s signature colours, streamed in from all corners of the country.

Flags, banners, and posters bearing Wiper’s logo and slogans fluttered in the morning breeze as rhythmic chants, songs, and ululations filled the air, setting an electrifying atmosphere for what supporters called the “rebirth of Wiper.”

The congress, attended by party officials, governors, MPs, and grassroots leaders, is expected to mark a strategic reset for Wiper as it seeks to consolidate its position within the opposition and strengthen its appeal across Kenya’s political landscape.

“Kalonzo Musyoka is positioning Wiper to play a central role in uniting the opposition and offering Kenyans a viable alternative in 2027.”

The congress comes at a critical moment, as opposition leaders from across the political spectrum signal their intention to form a broad-based coalition to counter President Ruto’s expected re-election bid.

Discussions have been ongoing among leaders from Azimio la Umoja, KANU, and other formations to forge a united front capable of consolidating voter blocs and articulating a shared reform agenda.

Political analysts view the Wiper NDC as both a show of internal strength and an opening act in the larger opposition realignment taking shape.

Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, who has in recent months emerged as one of the most visible figures in the opposition, is set to deliver a keynote address that will outline the party’s direction ahead of 2027.

Insiders say his speech will emphasise the need for unity among opposition parties to mount a strong challenge against President William Ruto and the ruling Kenya Kwanza Alliance.

According to senior party officials, the NDC’s agenda includes reviewing Wiper’s constitution, deliberating on a proposed name change to reflect a more inclusive and national outlook, and charting strategies to strengthen grassroots mobilisation.

Delegates will also consider and adopt amendments to the Wiper Patriotic Front Constitution, review reports from the National Executive Council, and approve key resolutions expected to shape the party’s path forward.

Kalonzo has been working behind the scenes to rally unity within the opposition,” said political analyst Dr. Josephine Mwangi.

This congress is as much about Wiper’s internal restructuring as it is about signalling readiness to lead or co-lead a coalition against Kenya Kwanza.”

Ahead of 2027, Wiper aims to reclaim its national relevance and play a defining role in shaping the opposition’s strategy ahead of 2027.
