Court grants DCI seven more days to hold Bob Njagi as investigations continue

Police have been granted seven more days to continue holding activist Bob Njagi as investigations into allegations of incitement related to the Gen Z memorial protests continue.

A court sitting in Kajiado on Friday ruled that detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) should detain Njagi until July 2.

Senior Principal Magistrate S. Mwangi made the ruling following a miscellaneous application by the prosecution seeking to detain Njagi for a further 14 days to allow investigators to conclude their inquiries. The court declined that request and instead granted seven days.

"The respondent shall remain in custody until July 2, 2026, to enable the investigating officers to conclude investigations," Mwangi ordered.

According to the prosecution, investigations relate to claims that Njagi used social media to incite members of the public before the Gen Z memorial protests.

Mwangi also directed that two mobile phones recovered from Njagi be handed over to DCI officers for forensic analysis as part of the ongoing investigations.

The court further ordered that Njagi be returned to Isinya Police Station, where he had previously been held pending his appearance before the court next Wednesday, when the prosecution is expected to present its next course of action.

Police said Njagi was arrested on Wednesday morning over claims that he shared videos on social media allegedly encouraging young people to participate in the Gen Z memorial demonstrations.

Investigators told the court they required additional time to analyse digital evidence and complete investigations before determining whether to prefer any charges.

Meanwhile, more than 100 people arrested during police operations in Kajiado County on Wednesday and Thursday are expected to be arraigned before the Kajiado Law Courts.

The majority of those arrested, according to police, were apprehended in Kitengela Town and are being held at various police stations across Kajiado County.
