DCI Summons Bus Driver Again as Forensic Experts Analyse Cyrus Jirongo's Phone
Detectives investigating the death of former Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo have intensified their probe by analyzing his mobile phone as they piece together his final moments.
The Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) has also summoned the driver of the bus that crushed Jirongo's car for further questioning.
Forensic experts are examining the late politician's phone records to establish who he might have communicated with before the fatal accident that occurred at 2:19 am along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway.
This development comes as CCTV footage from a nearby petrol station revealed crucial details about the moments leading to the crash.
The footage captures Jirongo’s white saloon car arriving at the station from the Nairobi side at 2:18am, bypassing the fuel pumps before executing a quick U-turn 34 seconds later and heading back towards Nairobi.
At 2:19:25 am, a 65-seater bus traveling towards Nakuru at high speed collided head-on with Jirongo's vehicle.
The impact was so intense that the bus dragged the car about 25 metres on the tarmac before it spun violently and came to rest.
Smoke was seen coming from the vehicle, but no immediate response followed, with no one alighting from the bus to check on the situation.
Nearly 49 minutes later, at approximately 2:48 am, a crowd began gathering at the scene.
Meanwhile, leaders from Kakamega led by Governor Fernandes Baraza visited Jirongo's family at their Nairobi home to condole with them.
Baraza described Jirongo as a unifying leader, saying his death is "a great loss not only to the Western region but also the entire nation."The committee planning the burial assured the family of full support during the preparations.
Investigators are still working to establish whether Jirongo was alone during the accident and what led to the sudden U-turn minutes before the fatal collision.
