Kalonzo holds talks with Gachagua, Wamalwa as opposition unity push gathers pace

Wiper leader Kalonzo Musyoka on Tuesday held talks with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua and DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa in Nairobi for consultations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

The meeting came a day after Kalonzo chaired a joint Council and National Executive Committee meeting of the Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition Party at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi.

Kalonzo, who is the party leader of Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Coalition, was mandated by the coalition's Council to continue engaging like-minded political formations as part of efforts to build a broad-based national opposition movement.

The Council specifically authorised Kalonzo to engage the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP), People's Liberation Party (PLP), United Green Movement (UGM) and the Linda Mwananchi movement once it secures registration as a political party.

The Tuesday meeting with Gachagua and Wamalwa came against the backdrop of growing efforts to bring opposition parties and political movements together ahead of the next General Election.

Sharing photographs of the meeting on social media, Kalonzo said the three leaders had held consultations on the political direction of the country.

“This morning, I was joined by my brothers Rigathi Gachagua and Eugene Wamalwa for consultations on the way forward for our country,” Kalonzo posted.

“We continue our engagements, strengthening the unity of the Opposition as we work together to restore hope and deliver the Kenya that our people deserve.”

Wamalwa also confirmed the meeting, saying the leaders remained focused on building a united country.

“We remain focused on the bigger picture, building a united, peaceful, and better Kenya for all. Our unity is not a matter of circumstance, it is a deliberate covenant. We shall remain united,” he said.

The meeting is likely to fuel speculation over the possibility of a wider opposition alliance involving Azimio, Gachagua's DCP and other political formations seeking to challenge President William Ruto in 2027.

Azimio has reportedly been seeking to bring Gachagua into its fold, with the former Deputy President emerging as an important political player in the Mt Kenya region.

Gachagua has increasingly positioned himself as a leading critic of the Ruto administration and has been working to consolidate his political base through the DCP and engagements with leaders from different parts of the country.

His inclusion in a wider opposition alliance could give the coalition greater access to Mt Kenya, a region expected to play a significant role in the 2027 presidential contest.

The former Deputy President's political standing has also made him an important figure in negotiations over the shape of the opposition.

Kalonzo's latest engagements suggest that opposition leaders are increasingly moving beyond individual party structures in search of a broader political arrangement.
