Methu: State tried to lure me into forming a political party

Nyandarua Senator John Methu has claimed that State operatives attempted to persuade him to form his own political party following the Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) victory in the Ol Kalou by-election on July 16.

Methu, the DCP Secretary-General designate, said the alleged overtures were aimed at drawing him into the opposition leadership before eventually aligning him with President William Ruto as a potential running mate.

The senator, alongside Kipipiri MP Wanjiku Muhia, played a leading role in DCP’s campaigns in Ol Kalou, where the party’s candidate, Sammy Kamau Ngotho, won the parliamentary seat.

Speaking in an interview on Sunday night, Methu said he rejected the idea of forming a separate party after consulting Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro, whom he said had advised him against splitting the Mt Kenya political base.

“They tried to lure me into forming my own party and becoming a principal in the opposition, only for us to converge at the tail end and make me Ruto’s running mate,” Methu claimed.

He claimed that Nyoro had assured him he would join their party to prevent a division of votes in the Mt Kenya region.

Methu, however, said he was surprised when he learnt that Nyoro had formed his own political party, raising questions about the future of political cooperation among leaders from the region.

When I heard that he had formed his own party, I could not believe my ears,” he said.

The senator’s remarks point to growing tensions over political parties and alliances in the region as leaders position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His claims about State involvement were not independently verified.

The DCP legislator also expressed confidence in Wiper Patriotic Front (WPF) leader Kalonzo Musyoka, citing his opposition to the impeachment process against former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua in 2024.

Methu said Kalonzo had demonstrated political loyalty by standing with Gachagua at a time when many leaders were reluctant to support him.

“I can trust Kalonzo Musyoka any minute because he stood with Gachagua in 2024 when it was not fashionable to stand with him. Kalonzo stood with Gachagua when most people didn’t,” he said.

Methu further dismissed claims that former President Uhuru Kenyatta was financing the opposition, insisting that neither he nor Gachagua had received money from the retired president.

Uhuru Kenyatta has no role in all this. Neither my party leader nor I have ever received a shilling from him,” he said.
