Murkomen warns against CHAN disruptions after Malala threats

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has issued a strong warning to political actors against disrupting the upcoming African Nations Championship (CHAN) quarter-final match between Harambee Stars and Madagascar, set for Friday, August 22, at Moi International Sports Centre (MISC), Kasarani.
Speaking at a press briefing in Murang’a on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, Murkomen assured Kenyans that the government is fully prepared to maintain order and ensure the tournament proceeds without incident.
The Cabinet Secretary specifically addressed threats made by DCP Deputy Party Leader Cleophas Malala, associated with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
Malala warned that Gachagua’s arrest upon arrival from the United States could spark mass protests, potentially disrupting CHAN matches.
“Any disruptive activities from all political actors, both those who have been outside the country and those who are within, will not be entertained in Kasarani,” Murkomen said.
We want to see that law and order prevail in our country,” Murkomen said, emphasising that political interference would not be tolerated.
He further highlighted the government’s close coordination with the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to ensure all safety standards are met.
“We will provide the necessary security to make sure that the sports activity is successful. Once CAF confirms arrangements, we will call on Kenyans to support Harambee Stars and follow all rules,” he added.
Potential disruptions
Malala cautioned that thousands of supporters could protest along Thika Road, the main route to Kasarani Stadium, if Gachagua were detained.
“If you apprehend Rigathi Gachagua the following day, you will see demonstrations, and yet the Harambee Stars will be playing on Friday, because I’m sure that if Gachagua is apprehended, we will not be able to see the Harambee Stars play on Friday for the quarter finals,” Malala said.
He also criticised the government for pressuring Gachagua to explain his claims that some officials had links with extremist groups such as Al-Shabaab and Sudan’s Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Support for Harambee Stars
Murkomen urged Kenyans to continue supporting Harambee Stars, stressing that fans must follow security protocols to ensure the tournament runs safely and without disruptions.
