Opposition intensifies Western Kenya drive with Kakamega night stop
Opposition leaders intensified their grassroots mobilisation drive in Western Kenya on Friday night, making a late-evening stop in Kakamega County as they continued efforts to consolidate support ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The leaders, who are on a three-day political charm offensive across the Western region, held a night rally at Shikamoli–Makunga area in Kakamega, where they addressed residents and outlined their political agenda.
The delegation was led by Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua, Deputy DCP leader Cleophas Malala, Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, and Democratic Action Party–Kenya (DAP-K) leader Eugene Wamalwa.
Their appearance in the stop came after a day-long tour of several towns across Western Kenya, including Luanda in Vihiga County and Kisa East and Malava in Kakamega County.
The leaders were also joined in parts of the tour by Trans Nzoia Governor George Natembeya and other regional political figures.
The opposition team used the engagements to rally support and reaffirm plans to unite behind a single presidential candidate in a bid to challenge President William Ruto in the 2027 general election.
Speaking at different stops during the tour, the leaders emphasised the need for political coordination and sustained grassroots engagement across the region.
Following the Kakamega rally, Gachagua later shared a message on social media reflecting on the engagement with residents.
He said Western Kenya must play a central role in what he described as a broader political transformation agenda.
“Western Kenya must be an integral part of the transformative agenda to reclaim our country," Gachagua posted.
"This region, which commands a substantial number of votes and boasts a large, vibrant population, must be at the forefront of social and political transformation."
He added that his engagement with residents of Shikamoli–Makunga had strengthened his belief that political change was possible.
“Our resolutions have borne fruit, signalling that no regime will ever again manipulate the lives of the people of Western Kenya,” he stated, adding that he remained convinced that “better days lie ahead.”
Kalonzo also posted a brief message after the day’s activities, stating: “Sisi ni serious. KOMBOA KENYA.”
The leaders argued that unity among opposition parties would be central to presenting an alternative political platform and attracting support from different regions across the country.
The night rally formed part of a broader opposition push to expand grassroots networks and strengthen political presence in regions expected to play a decisive role in the next general election.
The leaders indicated that consultations and regional tours would continue as they work toward building a united political front ahead of 2027.
