Raila: Why I did not appear at Kamukunji for Saba Saba Day

Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga has said that circumstances forced him not to join protesters at Kamukunji to mark the historic Saba Saba Day.

Raila said there were road blocks all over town that made it difficult for protesters to access Kamukunji grounds.

"I was going to go to Kamukunji and join Kenyans in commemorating this important day, unfortunately, as you all know circumstances today, the roadblocks all over town which made it difficult for people to make it to Kamukunji," he said.

Raila was set to make an appearance at Kamkunji grounds at 3 PM in commemoration of the anniversary of the historic Saba Saba protests.

Speaking to the press on Sunday, Raila called on Kenyans to gather at Kamukunji to honour the spirit of the pro-democracy movement that began on July 7, 1990.

He emphasised that many of the injustices that sparked the original protests, including police brutality, economic inequality and human rights violations, remain unresolved.

“We have not achieved what Saba Saba intended,” Raila said.

“Violation of human rights is still a challenge in the country, police brutality is there and the economy has not performed as we expected.”
