Oscar Sudi: Albert Ojwang’s death has left me speechless

Kapseret Member of Parliament (MP) Oscar Sudi has called for swift and thorough investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of blogger and teacher Albert Ojwang.

Ojwang died in police custody just hours after being arrested from his rural home in Homa Bay County and booked at the Central Police Station in Nairobi.

Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja said on Monday, June 9, 2025, that Ojwang was found unconscious in a police cell shortly after being brought in and booked.

In a statement on his X account, Sudi extended condolences to Ojwang’s family and urged security agencies to act quickly.

"The news of the death of Albert Ojwang has left me speechless. I can’t imagine the pain his family is going through. Security agencies must move fast and take appropriate action against those responsible," Sudi wrote.

The MP emphasised that President William Ruto’s administration does not condone extrajudicial killings, adding that the government has made significant strides toward ending such incidents.

However, he noted that a few “weak links” continue to tarnish that progress.

"This administration vowed to end mysterious killings and has made great strides, but it seems a few weak links are dragging us back. I offer my sincere condolences to Ojwang’s family and pray that God gives them strength," he added.

Former Machakos Senator Johnson Muthama also demanded justice for Ojwang, asserting that the killing was both tragic and unacceptable.

In a statement issued on Monday, June 10, 2025, Muthama, who serves as a commissioner at the Parliamentary Service Commission (PSC), reminded the public that President Ruto had campaigned on a promise to end extrajudicial killings.

"During our campaign, we assured Kenyans that President William Ruto’s administration would put an end to extrajudicial killings. Therefore, those responsible for the death of Albert Ojwang must be held fully accountable under the law," Muthama said.

"What happened to him is both tragic and unacceptable. Such acts not only violate human rights but also damage our country’s reputation globally. A few rogue individuals must not be allowed to operate with impunity."

He concluded by offering his condolences to the bereaved family:

"I extend my deepest condolences to the family of Mzee Ojwang during this difficult time."
